De Kalb County and Surrounding Local Newspapers
The following list was compiled and submitted by Melodie Sanders of Arlington,
Texas in September 2008.
Introduction
In 1984, a guide for finding American local
newspapers was posted to Roots-L, the genealogy discussion list. At that
time, it was a major undertaking to track down the newspapers for a specific
county or region. In 1982, the National Endowment for the Humanities and
Library of Congress started an ambitious program of identifying and cataloging
local newspapers all over the country. Each state was encouraged to apply for
grants to accomplish this program.
In
April of 1987, the Illinois State Historical Library (now the
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library) received a planning grant from
NEH to develop a survey to assess the state's newspaper
Collections. In April of 1989, the Illinois Newspaper Project
team received another grant from NEH to undertake the cataloging and
inventorying work. The cataloging was added to the OCLC WorldCat
database. This is the database, most libraries in the United
States use for cataloging library materials and for locating holdings
for library materials to be borrowed or copied for Interlibrary Loan.
By
October 2007, INP staff have inventoried and cataloged 10,115 U.S.
newspaper titles and added 10,901 holdings records to the newspaper
union list in OCLC. The INP will soon complete the preservation
microfilming of unique Illinois newspaper titles for the purpose of
preservation microfilming.
But
this is just the beginning. In 2005, the National Endowment for
the Humanities and Library of Congress began the next phase, the
National Digital Newspaper Program. Over the next 20 years, NDNP
will create a national, digital resource of historically significant
newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories published between
1836 and 1922. This searchable databases will be permanently
maintained at the Library of Congress and be freely accessible via the
Internet. As in the earlier project, grants will be given to the
states to digitalize their local newspapers. Someday, you
will be able to search on Internet most if not all of the newspaper
titles for Illinois. For more information on these programs:

United States Newspaper Program (USNP), <http://www.neh.gov/projects/usnp.html>;

Not all of the titles below will be
available. Some are on the Illinois Newspaper Project wish list, and they
have not located copies of the issues. Some are not microfilmed and the print
copies are found only in one or two libraries and are in fragile condition.
There are generally four ways you can obtain copies of articles.
You can try to borrow or have copied the articles via your public or
academic library through the Interlibrary Loan program. Be aware
that not all libraries will lend microfilm and very, very few would
lend print editions. More will make copies for you. The
second approach is to write the library directly. You may be able
to buy a copy of microfilm. Very rarely will a library have the
manpower to find the article you wish to get unless you already have
the citation. The third approach is to go to the library and
search the microfilm yourself. Not all issues of all titles are
microfilmed, so check first. Many of the print issues are to
fragile for searching. When this occurs, you may have to wait
until the libraries microfilm the issues. The last approach is to
hire a researcher in De Kalb County to do the work for you.
In
the titles below, the title is linked to the public interface of OCLC's
WorldCat database. If you will enter your zip code, for each
title, you will be given the library holding issues. Note that
not all libraries will have complete runs. A list of issues for
each title by location can be found at: <http://www.illinoishistory.gov/lib/newspaper.htm>.
This document is focused on De Kalb County newspapers. Since the Illinois
Newspaper Project was for all of Illinois, if you are looking for newspapers
in other counties, do check the Illinois Newspaper Project Database <http://www.library.uiuc.edu/inp/database.php>
and the public interface of OCLC's WorldCat, <http://www.worldcat.org/>.
