Veale’s of Malta, Illinois

In 1852, the Oliver Veale family migrated to Darlington, Ontario Province, Canada to a place called Bowmanville and eventually to Malta Illinios.  In 1841, Oliver’s mother and father, John and Hannah Veale and his brothers and sisters made a 5 and ½ month journey aboard the Amelia Thompson to New Plymouth, New Zealand.   (Siblings included Elizabeth Oxenham (Thomas), Jane Black (William), Hannah Dingle (James), Prudence Skinner (William), Ann Rundle (Richard) and brothers Thomas and John Veale).  Only his sister Hariet Martyn, (John) remained on in England at North Hill, North Tameron, Cornwall.  

The Canada/Dekalb Veale family included parents Oliver Veale and Mary Ann Bailey Veale and their children; Samuel, Elizabeth, Marwood Bailey, Hannah, Ellen, Albert.  They were farmers. 

In 1864, the parents and four of the children came to Illinois.  The father, Oliver Veale, purchased 160 acres of farmland in Milan Township.  In November 19, 1872, Mary Ann Bailey Veale died and the father Oliver returned to Canada leaving Marwood Bailey Veale the work of conducting the homestead in Milan.

 On March 28, 1871, Marwood Bailey Veale married Flora Blackman, a local teacher.  Flora was the daughter of Sophia (Kibbee) Blackman and Ira Blackman.  The Blackmans were of English descent and had moved from New York to Rock County Wisconsin 1846.  In 1860, they moved to Milan Township.  In 1867, Ira Blackman, was sworn in as Milan Justice of the Peace by Richard J. Oglesby, Governor, State of Illinois.   

In 1883, Marwood Bailey Veale became sole proprietor to the 160 acres of farmland in Milan.  He held various town offices and he and Mrs. Veale attended the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was an Elder and a Sunday school teacher.  

 The children of Marwood Bailey and Flora Veale were; Clyde B., (Mary Conlin), Merta (George Spickerman), Bertha (Herbert Van Patten), Lester Ira (Verna Haish), Marwood Vernie  (Lelia Hamerick), Samuel Morris (Birdie Walker) and Pearl Veale who died in infancy.  All of the above are buried in the Malta cemetery together with their grandparents, Oliver and Mary Ann Bailey Veale.  

NOTE:  All British Veales are said to descended from Lord Humphrey De Vielles Pont Audemere, Normandy, France 900a.d.   The Veale motto is “Victima Deo” meaning “sacrifices for God”.  In Clawton, many generations of the Veales were Church Wardens.   They were farmers on Upper Eastacombe.

Richard Veale was born Bef. 1621. He married Temperance Aish on 14 Jun 1638 in St Peter, Ashwater, Devon, England., daughter of Robert Aish and Elizabeth Hall.
